I saw this unique flowers at our nearby Arboretum. I just could not believe how unreal they looked in the plant kingdom. . It was an unforgettable experience to stand next to one of these massive 8 feet tall blue stalks. The flower color was perhaps a darker huge of unbelievable turquoise-blue. More information to share as below.
The genus Puya supposedly contains over 100 species, most native to the higher elevations in South America, like a cactus or succulent. Despite the large number of species in the wild, only a dozen or so are ever seen in cultivation and only a few are common'. These are bromeliads, and like most bromeliads, these plants are primarily monocarpic (die once they finish flowering). However, these are generally prolific growers and the death of a single flowering individual in a large colony of Puyas rarely is a noticeable event.
The Blue Puya ( Puya berteroniana ) is a much larger and even more dangerous plant, is a terrestrial Bromeliad related to Pineapple. The plant forms a rosette of silvery-green leaves about 3 feet long. The leaves are spiny, so move carefully around the plant. The flower stalks themselves are soft, and the flowers are silky-smooth. These other-worldly blooms appear around May or June. The blooms are pollinated by birds, which love to sit on the outward-pointing tips and drink the nectar inside!
